Thinking of buying a Zinus Memory Foam Mattress online?

In uncertain times, some things are becoming clearer - and enjoying a few more home comforts is one of them. Let's face it, if we're going to spend at least 6 to 8 hours of our day on our beds, we may as well be comfortable.

In this review I look at my experience of buying a Zinus Memory Foam Mattress in a box.

Zinus Memory Foam Mattresses are commonly purchases as a 'Bed in a Box'

Why is Memory Foam so good?

We have a lot to thank NASA for. Memory Foam is one of their innovations dating back to the mid 1960's.

Memory foam was originally quite expensive but has become much more affordable over time. It's commonly found in mattresses and pillows, and now also in shoes and blankets.

The basic beauty of memory foam is that it supports and matches any pressure on it (think person here), and will always shift back to its original shape.

Is it risky buying a mattress online?

It definitely feels like a leap of faith buying something such as a mattress online without trying it out first. This is especially so if you're anything like me and are used to doing the rounds of the bedding outlets before committing to a new mattress.

The thing is, it's becoming very common to buy a mattress online. The more people do this, the more feedback and reviews are available and you can find out a lot about particular companies, experiences and products.

It helps build trust, and you'll find returns policies are becoming more flexible.

Buying a Bed in a Box

To be able to squeeze a full size bed in a box means it needs to be compressed and rolled for shipping. That's quite a feat!

Regardless of which mattress thickness and size you buy, the box is going to weigh a bit. It's always recommended that two people carry this no matter which bed you buy, so plan on getting someone to help you lift it into the house and onto the bed base.

When you open the box, the mattress needs up to 72 hours (3 days) to fully expand to its correct shape. That said, it doesn't take long to expand out to close to the size it will finish at.

Give it a couple of hours to get rid of any smells from the memory foam being compressed and held in plastic for days on end.

It will have a bit of a smell to start with, but nothing awful and it quickly disappears. I unpacked mine from its box around lunchtime, and slept on it that night. I didn't notice any odd smell at all by this time.

Zinus recommend that the packing box be opened within a week of it being delivered to your door.

Leaving it in the box too long can cause some minor decompression issues.

What is a Green Tea Mattress?

Some bedding companies such as Zinus infuse their mattresses with Green Tea Extract. This helps maintain the overall freshness of the materials used without adding excess chemicals. It doesn't mean the bed is going to smell of Green Tea.

As well as natural green tea extract, Zinus infuses its memory foam mattresses with Castor Natural Seed Oil.

The Green Tea extract and the added ActivCharcoal will help keep odors and bacteria under control. ActivCharcoal is made from purified charcoal. These tiny particles absorb moisture and thereby reduce the odor-causing agents.

How to pick the right mattress thickness

Your body needs the right mix of support and softness to feel refreshed after a good night's sleep. Without good support, your back and neck can easily move out of alignment and you're going to wake up feeling a bit old and sore.

Side sleepers such as me, need to be especially careful of their neck alignment and should buy a pillow suited to this style of sleeping.

Bedding manufacturers make a range of mattresses to cover variations in sleeping styles and personal preferences in comfort.

Generally speaking, the thicker the mattress, the more plush and soft the mattress will be. Personally I love the feeling of a plush mattress. It makes me feel like I'm lying on a cloud. As a side sleeper though, I need to make sure the mattress I buy will give me the support I need in the right places.

  • 8" mattresses are designed with back sleepers in mind
  • 10-12" mattress is designed for back/side sleepers
  • 13" mattress is designed for all-around sleeping, including those who sleep on their stomach

Why are there so many layers of different foam?

A soft mattress made only of memory foam will lose its shape over time and the heavier parts of your body will sink too far into the foam.

At the other end of the spectrum, no one likes to sleep on a rock. Even for those amongst us who like a firm mattress, you don’t want a mattress made only of high-density foam. This would be way too hard and uncomfortable, and giving you no support where your body needs it.

This is why there is a range of types of foams used to create each of these mattresses.

Zinus Mattress Foam Layers

All Zinus Green Tea Foam mattresses are made up of several layers of fused foam.

The 12-inch mattress has four thick layers of foam, making it the most comfortable mattress for many people. It has a top layer of memory foam followed by a layer of comfort foam and a layer of high-density foam. This one is finished off with an even higher-density support foam.

The 10 and 8-inch mattresses have three layers. Two of the layers of foam are high-density layers which are combined into one layer. This is because there isn’t enough room to accommodate an extra layer for airflow with this thickness. This makes them a tad 'less plush' than the 12-inch option. That said, I have tried the 8 inch mattress and it still has a plush feel.

The density of the Zinus Green Tea is 3 pounds, which means it’s neither plush nor firm. This makes it the perfect middle-of-the-road mattress that will suit most types of sleepers.

It also makes it a great choice for those who are new to the world of memory foam.

If you prefer your mattress to be firm, you will probably want to steer clear of the 12-inch option, and you may even be better off with the Zinus Ultima Comfort mattress.

Does Memory Foam Mattresses make you feel hot?

By 'hot' here, we don't mean the kind you most likely want to feel in bed. This is purely about your body temperature.

Your level of comfort will depend on the type of sheets you use. Sheets made from Egyptian cotton or bamboo will keep you cool in Summer. Switching these out to flannel sheets will keep you more comfortable in the colder months.

Zinus also recommend a flat surface to provide the mattress with extra support.

The Zinus 10-Year LIMITED Warranty

Zinus Certification

The foam is CertiPUR. This means its US Certified for durability, performance, and content. All Zinus mattresses come with a worry-free 10 year limited warranty.

The Conclusion

The Zinus Green Tea Memory is the Number 1 Best Seller in online mattresses on Amazon.com.

Would I buy one again? The answer for me is No, but I'm not in the US. You may get better customer service in the US.
